Hello all, I’m curious how Hooktheory fits into your songwriting process, what part it is in the timeline.
I think this forum being called the support forum draws some focus away from the fun conversations we could be having as members of the Hooktheory community!
I usually start my ideas in a voice memo recorder or in hookpad, before in the latter I figure out what key it’s in and then throw some chords on top when I’m ready. I’m writing music for other people to sing right now, but I haven’t quite felt the need to put everything into Finale or whatever - the benefits are great, but moving all the lyrics over would take so much time compared to Hookpad’s easy as pie, I mean sometimes cumbersome, but really quite great lyrical input system.
When it comes time to orchestrate my music I’ll definitely move to finale or something else, but it’ll be working off of the bones of what I’ve finalized in Hookpad. In this stage of my career I haven’t gotten to the point of throwing the midi files of all the music into a DAW for better instrument sounds, they’re actually good enough for everything I do. I even used Hookpad instruments for a short music video I shot! It seems Hookpad’s strengths are non-classical instruments, they pass as good enough. Piano and violin alone do the work but when it comes to my senior project, for the final product where we’re filming stuff I’m exporting these midis to a DAW.
I’m sure I’ll run into the 4 voice limit sometime with the musical theatre style writing I’m doing, but most of the time 4 voices at once is enough - at most the fifth voice is doubling one of the 4 voices, the problem is when I’ll need 4 voices and an instrumental melodic track! But this is a Hook pad after all. I’d just prefer to do all of my writing in here, and do the arrangements later.
