Inserting notes (and chords) to a full line

I put all my notes for the melody, and when I set the duration for each, I run into a situation that my line gets full and I'd like to insert (rests, add a note, increase duration) and it won't let me. I'd like the notes at the end of the line to spill to the next line and push everything forward, just as in a word processor. Can it be done? and if so, how?
